When my husband and I welcomed our first baby, our house was a complete mess — and I’ll never forget the look of pure terror on our photographer’s face when she walked into our living room and kitchen. I laughed and quickly reassured her, “Don’t worry — we’re not shooting down here. I promise the bedroom and nursery are ready.”
Those early weeks with a newborn are beautiful, emotional, and yes… a little chaotic. As an Indianapolis newborn photographer (and a mama myself), I want you to know that I never expect your home to look perfect. In fact, I expect it to feel lived-in. My goal isn’t to create a picture-perfect house — it’s to document this fleeting season of your life in a way that feels honest and relaxed.
Focus on Two or Three Key Areas
Instead of trying to clean your entire home, choose two to three spaces where you’d love your photos to take place. The best spots are usually the most well-lit areas of your home, such as:
* The nursery
* The master bedroom
* A bright living room
If you have a unique space — like a cozy library corner or a playroom for older siblings — those can add beautiful variety to your session as well.
Let the Light In
Natural light makes a huge difference during in-home newborn photos. Before I arrive, try:
* Opening curtains and blinds
* Turning off overhead lights
* Clearing space near windows when possible
Late morning through early afternoon typically offers the most flattering natural light for in-home newborn sessions around Indianapolis and the surrounding areas.
Keep Outfits Simple and Ready
Having outfits laid out ahead of time helps sessions flow smoothly. Neutral tones and soft textures photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection rather than distractions. Think cozy, comfortable, and timeless — nothing overly complicated.
Tidy What’s in the Background
If you have an open floor plan, focus on lightly tidying the areas that may appear behind you in photos. You don’t need to deep clean — just move anything that might pull attention away from the moment. And don’t worry… I’m always happy to adjust blankets, shift a chair, or move small items around when needed.
What You Don’t Need to Stress About
You don’t need a perfectly styled home or a long checklist. I’ll guide you into the best light, help you feel comfortable, and gently direct you throughout the session. Laundry baskets, burp cloths, and snack wrappers are part of real life — and real life is welcome here.
Simple Ways to Prepare Baby
A few easy things can help your session feel calm and natural:
* Feed baby shortly before I arrive if possible
* Have a favorite swaddle or neutral blanket nearby
* Keep the room slightly warm for cozy snuggles
Real Life Is the Goal
Whether you’re welcoming your baby in Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, or Zionsville, your home tells part of your story. These sessions are less about perfection and more about preserving the tiny details — the way you hold your baby, the quiet moments in the nursery, and the feeling of being together at home.
If you’re expecting and thinking about an in-home newborn session, I’d love to help you create something relaxed, heartfelt, and true to this season of your life.
